Dear Delegates and Faculty Advisors,

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to join us for the exciting third session of Maria’s Model United Nations, to be held from Friday, May 19th to Sunday, May 21st, 2017.

Since its inception, MMUN has dedicated itself to train and bring the best quality MUN for the delegates from the Northeastregion who feel passionately about public speaking and realise the importance of discussing matters ranging from climate change to geo political issues. MMUN is driven by the passion instilled by our founder, Mrs Nellie Ahmed Tanveer, and by her motto of ‘Learning beyond the classroom’, which highlights the importance of not limiting ourselves to our studies, and the value of key skills such as research, public speaking, debate, sports, music and also the importance of teamwork. Above all else, we hope that the experiences from MMUN will inspire delegates to work harder, improve on their mistakes, and to continue to learn beyond the committee room. We hope this experience will challenge students to think critically, debate wisely, lobby smartly, and always uphold the truth.

Delegates, whatever you may believe, whether you prefer coalition or one party, whether you supported an agenda or fought as hard as you could against it, our collective futures depends on your willingness to uphold your duties as a citizen not only of your own country but as citizens of this world. To vote, to speak out, to stand up for others, especially the weak and the vulnerable, knowing that each of us is only here because somebody, somewhere stood up for us. We need every citizen to stay active in our public life, so that our public life reflects the goodness and the decency that I see in the people every single day. Voices that help us see ourselves not, first and foremost, as black or white or brown, or Asian or Latino or American, not as gay or straight, immigrant or native born, but as humans first, bound by a common creed. Voices, Dr. King believed would have the final word, voices of unarmed truth and unconditional love. And they’re out there - those voices. They don’t get a lot of attention, they don't seek a lot of fanfare, but they’re busy doing the work this country needs doing. I see them everywhere I travel in this incredible world of ours. That's the world I know. That’s the world we love. Optimistic that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. That’s what makes me so hopeful about our future. I believe in change because I believe in you, each and every one of you.

Yours Sincerely,

  • Anurag Baruah
